Work begins on Gibraltar Non-motorized Trail
October 22 and 23. Republic. Despite chilly temperatures, wind and rain, Dave Lent, Recreation Specialist for the Republic Ranger District, supervised over a dozen volunteers as they broke ground and constructed almost one mile of the non-motorized section of the Gibraltar Trail. Volunteers from Ferry County , Colville , Spokane and as far away as Sandpoint worked together constructing the first section of the trail. The twelve mile loop trail will be closest trail in the National Forest to the town of Republic and will offer early and late season snow-free trail access. The moderate trail features stands of old growth Ponderosa, grassy meadows and clear views of the Kettle Crest and surrounding mountains. The family-oriented trail is designed for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, as well as skiing and snowshoeing. “What’s unique about this trail is the collaboration with the Forest Service by several local organizations”, said Steve Anthes, president of the Ferry County Trails Association. Many of the volunteers are members of Conservation Northwest, Spokane Mountaineers, Northwest Washington Forestry Coalition and the Ferry County Trails Association. “Building trails builds community…and it’s good for the economy”, said Anthes.
